DUNS number

DUNS or D-U-N-S is a unique numeric identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). In the business world, it’s very similar to the EIN, which functions like your business’s social security number.

It is free to obtain, and many banks and creditors will ask you for a DUNS number, along with your business EIN when you apply for credit or loans.

Where do I get a DUNS number?

D&B assigns DUNS numbers. You will have to get in touch with them (online or over the phone ) to get a DUNS number assigned for your company.

What’s the cost of a DUNS number?

The cost to get a DUNS number is $0. If you want to do it yourself, it’s free. There are companies that will do the online “paperwork”  and deal with D&B to get the DUNS number for you at a cost. If you don’t have the time to spend on the phone with D&B’s sales people, it may be worthwhile to pay someone else to deal with them.

How long does it take to get a DUNS number?

D&B’s website states it can take upto 30 days to get a free DUNS number. They offer an expedited service for $230 USD. In our recent experience, it takes about a week or so for a DUNS number to be created after your company information has been verified.
